Racing
Racing On The Salt

The Bonneville Salt Flats lies on approximately 30,000 acres of public land. The race track known as Bonneville Speedway is located 4 miles east of Wendover on the Utah/Nevada Border. The Salt Flats are so flat, it is possible to discern the curvature of the Earth.

The Salt Flats are a remnant of a prehistoric lake, named for Captain L.E. Bonneville, US Officer and Explorer. At one time Lake Bonneville had a maximum depth of 1050 feet and was 145 miles wide and 346 miles long. It stretched from Salt Lake City to Pilot Peak west of what is now Wendover. Pilot Peak was a famous landmark pioneers used as they journeyed west to Oregon and California. The Donner Party lost fatal time while crossing this barren land. If you look close at the mountains, you can still see the ancient shore lines high above the salt.

Kit Carson was the first white man to cross the salt beds in 1845 just days before LT John C Fremont. Not long after, in 1896, the Salt Flats began attracting racers when W.D. Rishel charted them as part of a new route for a cross-country bicycle race. It wasn't until 1914 that Teddy Tetzlaff began a racing tradition, as he set the first unofficial speed record of 141.73 mph in a Blitzen Benz. In 1932, D.A. (Ab) Jenkins of Utah driving his "Mormon Meteor" established a 24 hour record at an average of 112.91 mph. Other racers soon followed, including Major John Cobb (England), Sir Malcolm Campbell and Captain George E.T. Eyston (England) rocketing his "thunderbolt" across the Salt at a speed of 311.42 mph. Several peaks of the Silver Island Mountains are named after these famous racers. Since then, the Bonneville Speedway has seen many of the world's top auto and motorcycle race drivers. Four times a year (July, August, September, and October) racers rush to the Salt Flats, hoping to break previously set records. Their goal may be to break an existing record or to drive fast enough to join the prestigious "200 mph Club". No matter what the reason, these races are truly a test of both man and machine.

Attractions
Wendover Air Field
Wendover Air Field was the training site for the Super Secret mission to end World War II, through use of the atomic bomb. Both the Enola Gay (the first plane to drop the A-bomb) and the Bockscar (the second to do so) and their incredible crews were stationed here during the latter part of the War. Now you can see a part of history by taking the self guided driving tour through the now defunct air base. Brochures can be picked up at the Nevada Welcome Center, located off exit 410 on I-80.

Bonneville Salt Flats
The world famous Bonneville Salt Flats have been the site of land speed records since 1914. The remains from ancient Lake Bonneville, this area is host to four racing events beginning in July each year. To see the area where the racing takes place, follow the signs off Exit 4 on I-80. A historical marker has been erected to detail the exciting events that happen here. In an effort to "Save The Salt" several entities, including Reilly Chemical and the Bureau of Land Management - Salt Lake Office, have begun a salt laydown project. By pumping a brine solution onto the Salt over the winter months, they hope to leave behind a fresh layer of salt as evaporation takes place in the late Spring and early Summer. A test patch was completed in 1996 and a full scale operation began in November 1997. Please Do Not Drive Onto The Salt!!

Pilot Peak
The beacon for the Donner Party as they crossed the Salt Flats, you can make the hike up this magnificent mountain. At the top, for those who make it, is a document to sign as proof of your journey -- a monument to those who dare to climb just because it's there! Information on the hike can be picked up at the Nevada Welcome Center, located off Exit 410 on I-80.

Goshute Raptor Migration Project
The Goshute Wilderness site is on Bureau of Land Management land and should be respected as such. As it is a study area, please impact the land as little as possible should you decide to visit. The hawk migration unit loves visitors who are genuinely interested in learning more about these hawks. Each fall, this group of hardworking people camp on the ridge to band the migrating hawks and are responsible for tracking and evaluating these majestic birds. More information can be found at the Nevada Welcome Center or by calling Hawkwatch International at (801) ???-????

Silver Island Mountain Scenic Byway
For those who like to get off the beaten path, this drive circles the mountain range just north of the Bonneville Salt Flats and partially follows the Donner Party Trail. Maps can be picked up at the Nevada Welcome Center for your tour which begins off Exit 4 from I-80. Four wheel drive is recommended, but not required. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos or explore on foot, but please remember you are on public lands and should respect the future of this beautiful expanse of desert.
